Mercury is conjunct Uranus today, 24 May, and the Sun in Gemini is trine Pluto. Seasonal Gemini intellect and social interaction is extra sharp, even brilliant, but there is a lot of nervous energy, a deep emotional undercurrent with a high potential for surprises…or clashes as Saturn is returning to fiery Aries for the first time in thirty years on 26/27 May, at the time of the New Moon in Gemini.

The Tarot card of Aries is The Emperor. Law and Order. The quest for the expansion of territory and influence. The rise of new power, for example, the power of technocracy, is speeding up on one side of a see-saw.

On the other side of this see-saw, we shall see either an active effort of re-consolidation -or else an inexorable decline-of old powers and accountability of governance over the next three years. A rewriting, or the calculated retraction of previous social contracts between governments and their people.

This is a cosmic re-assertion of Air and Fire over Earth and Water. Cardinal energy rules now, pushing change. Air fans the glowing embers. The flames may clear debris or enrich the soil. They will not necessarily always be destructive, though often they will. Disruption is inevitable. Saturn is always tough, if necessary, and not at its best in brave, ardent but impulsive Aries, where it is in fall. But if we have got stuck in the mud, overloaded and dragged down during the past three years of Saturn in Pisces, now we’ll climb out again. Neptune in Aries until 22 October 2025 will jar at times. It does not sit naturally with Saturn in Aries, but it does say we could get a job done, or make a dream come true. Neptune conjunct Saturn Aries says we can expect more big news of waterborne disease outbreaks, war at sea or other marine disasters during the next 3 months, if not the next 3 years.

There is something that we can finally MAKE happen, that we have been working on for a long time. Right now, though, is a time to respond, rather than react to the things that upset us on social media, and there is a great deal to upset anyone. Nothing will be achieved, whatever the provocation by losing our cool in a fraught situation with a family member, a neighbour, or a colleague.

The Lovers in this deck (and also in the Thoth deck) uses the triangle as the basis of the artistic composition. In the Thoth tarot, the Lovers symbolizes the marriage of the Emperor and Empress as performed by the Hermit. Here, the woman stands before the Tree of Knowledge, and the man stands before the Tree of Life.

The so-called “Law of Three” means that to get a result or a resolution, every action requires three forces. When three forces are present, things happen, actions are actualized. But without three forces—with one or two forces—nothing happens.

The first force is called the active or positive or motivating force. The second force is called the negative or passive or denying force. The third force is called the neutralizing, facilitating or invisible force. Or we could call it action, reaction, and third party intervention. Say we are talking about a war. There might be invasion, which is resistance but the deciding factor will likely be a third influencing factor, such as disease, or third party intervention, either via diplomacy, or because a third part comes to the aid of one side or the another.

The Thoth Tarot uses the blue and yellow associated with Mercury, Hermes …or Hermes Trismegistus, a legendary Hellenistic period figure representing a syncretic combination of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth.

The cloak of the headlong knight is like the wings of a dragonfly. I saw my first blue dragonfly of 2025 only this week, sure enough, during the first decan of Gemini season.

The Decans of Gemini

The word ‘Decan’ comes from the Latin meaning ‘ten.’ Each zodiac sign lasts about 30 days and is further divided into three blocks of roughly 10 days each. These are the decans, bringing added depth and nuance to the archetypal profile associated with your zodiac sign/sun sign.

The minor arcana cards associated with Gemini are the Eight, Nine and Ten of Swords, correlating with the dates of the decans. If you don’t feel like you are a ‘typical’ Gemini, we’re all unique, and there are many other aspects of our natal charts to take into consideration: our Moon sign, Rising Sign, Houses and planetary aspects. But our sun sign is our natal touchstone, and perhaps it is because you are a second or third decan Gemini native, rather than a ‘most typical’ first decan Gemini.

Card Meanings: Entrapment, uncertainty, a sense of helplessness, waiting for rescue, there is a way out if only you will open your eyes, look around, try a new approach and take a step forward. I have personally also come to associate this card with plumbing, leaks, drainage issues.

This decan gets a double dose of the planetary influence of inquisitive, rational, Mercury. This is an alert, perceptive, intellectual and forceful personality. The acumen is sharp. The negative side of this coin is a Gemini native who is just as inquisitive but careless, flighty, and unreliable.

First decan Gemini is a multi-talented juggler, light on their feet, graceful and agile. But at the same time they tend to develop a strong point of view on a wide range of subjects, and they have a clearly defined belief system. For all their apparent flightiness they are not fragile, also tough and resilient- even stubborn, a quality more usually associated with Taurus, its next door neighbour and predecessor in the zodiac.

Gemini make devoted partners, contrary to whatever people might assume. They will hang on in there when the going gets tough. While they are prone to restlessness, and often have considerable charisma or sex appeal to boot, they are shrewd and loving. They know when they’ve got a good thing, and they will be happy in their domestic lives, so long as there is plenty of variety in their work, and social interaction and short distance travel.

Second Decan Gemini

Card Meanings: The Nightmare card. Fatigue. Worry, 'the black dog' anxiety, stress, grief, insomnia, illness, the things that keep us awake at night.

Well, this card is a stinker, sure enough. Such is life sometimes. Who never has a night like this? And yet, the sub-ruler of this decan is Venus, planet of love, beauty- and money. This Gemini subject is known for personal charm, and a generous and giving spirit. The sub-ruler is Libra, ruled by Venus, the natural ruler of the seventh house of marriage, partnerships, close associates, associations, and legal matters. This Gemini is more of a "me-too" person, rather than an "I-am" person but needs to be especially careful in the selection of companions/associates, and especially needs to avoid making big decisions about a choice of partner too early in life.

These are personable people. Gemini strives on change while Libra works to establish equilibrium. Gemini 2nd decan is drawn to quiet, reserved people. Not only do opposites attract, but the imagined secrecy fascinates Gemini-Libra, and they also match up well with reliable, practical people who will get the job done with little fuss or excitement. A person that will ground, refine and implement the Gemini-Libra.

People respond well to the chatty warmth of the Second Decan Gemini. They have a keen sense of adventure, the same as the other Gemini decans, and they enjoy travel for the sake of new experiences. Third Decan Gemini

Card meanings: Destruction, despair, betrayal, “stabbed in the back,” darkness before dawn, the only way is up, illness, comatose, a fall, spinal injury, head injury.

These things happen. The personal planets of the third decan Gemini are Saturn and Uranus, painting a portrait full of contradictions. Sometimes this person is ultra-careful, dutiful, responsible, serious, at other times carefree or even careless. Uranus combined with the planet Mercury suggests an unusually active, or even brilliant mind, possibly even verging on genius. This person may be a thinker who is ahead of their times.
