In Greek mythology the scorpion was the nemesis of the great hunter Orion. According to myth Orion had boasted to his fellow hunter, virgin goddess of the Moon, Artemis that he would hunt and kill every last animal on Earth. Word of this reached Demeter, the goddess of Earth, who decided he needed dealing with, pronto. Artemis herself was the mightiest huntress. But she did not kill for the sake of killing.
Demeter now sent a giant scorpion to attack Orion. He fought and killed the scorpion, but not before it stung him, and then, to the desolation of Artemis, Orion died.
Zeus, impressed by the scorpion’s battle spirit, and at the request of Demeter, raised it to heaven as the gigantic constellation of Scorpius.

And then at the request of the heartbroken Artemis; he did the same for Orion, who shines overhead, so instantly recognizable, striding out across the northern skies in winter, as a reminder of our ancient origins; the Human as Hunter, with his dogs at his heels, Sirius (Canis Major) and his other dog Canis Minor, as they hunt the heavens in pursuit of The Hare, the constellation of Lepus.

The story of Orion is a warning against pride. Arrogance. Hubris. And ever and always in the night sky, the constellation of Orion still flees the sting of the rising Scorpion.
Scorpio is vengeful. It never forgets an injury. Or an injustice. Memory is long, and the sting in the tail comes later, as we are witnessing in world events this Scorpio season 2023. The tail of the Scorpion may strike at once, or later, much much later.
Scorpion fossils are still fluorescent many millions of years after their death, and they have been on this earth more than 450 million years.
The Scorpion of Demeter fulfilled its mission, faithful to its sacrificial duty in defense of the animal kingdom, even to the death, and here is a correspondence with the Empress card, as well as the Scorpio Death card in the Tarot.
The Empress is Demeter; Earth, Gaia, The Mother, all living things. There will always be a hunter. She cannot protect what she will not fight to defend.

Scorpio’s passion is a powerful primal energy. For good or ill, for creation and destruction, for birth and death.
But Scorpio never forgets a kindness either.
