This year we enter the zodiac territory of Aquarius on 19 or 20 January depending where you are in the world. Aquarius is named after the constellation of Aquarius the Water-Bearer, also known as the Cloud-Bearer. This is the sign of Fixed Air. Why fixed? This is airborne water, but this water is destined for the ground and will land as rain or snow once the load of water becomes too heavy for the clouds to carry.
But what is the ancient story behind the sign, and what might Aquarius season look like in 2025?

Astronomy
The constellation of Aquarius, Wiki Public Domain, lines drawn in to illustrate the shape of the water pitcher.
Aquarius the Water-Carrier is one of the oldest identified constellations of the Zodiac (the area of the sky as seen from Earth through which the sun, moon and planets all pass, whether this is occasionally or regularly.) Aquarius is the tenth largest constellation, seen as a big though faint constellation in the southern hemisphere. Its appearance is almost universally associated culturally and historically with sky, clouds, water- and therefore rain.
Aquarius lies in the dark region of the sky called The Sea, containing other 'watery' constellations; Pisces (the fish), Eridanus (the river), Cetus (the whale), Capricornus (the Sea-goat), Delphinus (the Dolphin), and Hydra (the Water-Serpent).
Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the zodiac and represents the concepts of what Classical astrologers called “Bona Fortuna” (“Good Fortune”) and the “House of Good Spirit.” Between mid-February and mid-March Aquarius is invisible, positioned behind the Sun. Aquarius can be seen in the autumn/fall in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere but it is not easily identified in the night sky with no bright first magnitude stars. The best time to see the constellation is at about 9:00 in the evening in early October.
Its brightest stars, while faint from Earth, are Sadalmelik “the lucky stars of the king,” and Sadalsuud, “the luck of lucks,” considered a most fortunate stellar omen of riches or a mighty destiny. Sadalsuud was once a hot blue star but now it is a cooling yellow supergiant star, 53 million years old, 6.5 times the diameter of Earth and 520 light years distant from Earth, give or take 20 years.
History and Mythology
Throughout the whole of human history, arguably the number one danger to humanity has been the threat of flood. Aquarius overhead meant winter rain was coming to the lands of Mesopotomia, the waters of life itself- aqua vitae. But the water carrier, the cloud can also act as an agent of death, destruction, flood and disease. For the Sumerians, Aquarius was a frightening figure, holding the vessel from which a great flood flowed from the heavens onto the earth, while the Babylonians called Aquarius ‘the curse of rain.’
To the Babylonians Aquarius was the god Ea, or GU.LA, 'The Great One' shown in the Babylonian star catalogues holding an overflowing vase. During the Early Bronze Age, the appearance of Aquarius, or the 'Way of Ea' corresponded to the period of 45 days on either side of the winter solstice, when the Babylonians regularly experienced destructive levels of flooding.
The Greek legend of Ganymede tells the story of a beautiful mortal boy abducted by Zeus/Jupiter to Mount Olympus to be the cup-bearer of the gods.
Another story of the ancient Greeks said that Aquarius caused a great flood which inundated the Earth during the Bronze Age, of which only Deucalion, son of Prometheus, and his wife Pyrrha survived, either by climbing in a chest and toughing it out, or building a great boat stocked with provisions, just as later in the Old Testament, Noah built his Ark. The ancient Greeks largely avoided living near lakes and rivers, it's thought, for hygiene reasons as well as protection from floods. There are remains of hydraulic anti-flooding works; dams, walls, and channels in cities and other settlements in the Minoan era, and the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods.
The zodiac sun sign of Aquarius now also signifies Information Technology. We can think especially of space tech and Cloud Technology.

The Aquarius Archetype
All the zodiac signs represent archetypes, meaning something that is considered to be a perfect or typical example of a particular kind of person or thing.
The zodiac signs paint a ‘typical’ portrait of a person born at a particular time of year, in a particular season and environmental conditions, based on the thirty-sixth latitude in the northern hemisphere where western Tropical astrology has its origins.
The major arcana Tarot card for Aquarius is The Star, standing for individualism, Humanity, Hope, Inspiration, exploration, progress, new technology and recovery from sickness or despair. Aquarius is communicative, humanitarian, progressive, fraternal, optimistic and idealistic, representing pure intellect. The shadow side? Every sign has one. Intellect must be grounded in an understanding of the realities of the lived human experience, or there is the potential for totalitarianism, or the misapplied or even tyrannical exercise of technological innovation.
The archetypes of Aquarius: The Teacher, The Reformer, The Revolutionary, The Truth- teller/Preacher, The Exile, The Scientist.
Aquarius is a Fixed Air Sign. The Tarot court card offering clues in respect of a person, timing or situation is classically likely to be the King of Swords, though the Queen may also represent an Aquarius-born subject.

Card Meanings: a mature man of knowledge and authority, a ruler, adviser, judge, lawyer, doctor, scientist, teacher, technician, engineer, IT expert, diagnosis, authority, law, medicine, logic, impartiality, metrics, statistics, cool, remote, emotionally aloof
Aquarius is intellectually active, generally quick to adopt new ideas. The archetypal persona, male or female, is keenly observant, sharp, clever, firm, fair, analytical, logical, amusing and charming. They are often musically gifted, numerate, and very often work in Education, Law, Music, Medicine, Dentistry and IT in technical, forensic or surgical consultant roles. They need plenty of personal space and fresh air, and if emotionally challenged, they are more likely to administer advice or medicine than take it themselves, exhibiting behaviours that are stubborn and quietly ruthless.
Aquarius is ruled by two planets, Saturn, known to the ancients as the planet of duty and structure, but also Uranus, 'discovered' 1781, designated the planet of upheaval and rebellion. Therefore, as you might imagine, this is a sign of acute paradoxes. There is on the one hand the dutiful, responsible, possibly authoritarian Aquarian, prone to dogma, and the freewheeling Aquarian archetype.
Aquarius is humane, civilized and honourable in dealings. They set great store on friendship and loyalty. They need to belong and be of service, just as their symbol is the water-bearer or cup-bearer, a person pouring water for another. This symbol can be interpreted to imply a destiny to serve others, but by the same token Aquarius may carry water to 'cleanse' the world of 'errant' thinking. Taken to extremes, the shadow side of Aquarius represents a cult mentality, ideological militancy, fundamentalism. Where they make a false step, it may be because they trusted their cerebral processes at the expense of their instinct. Aquarius may be moody, prone to bouts of depression, or they may sparkle with the brilliance of diamonds, warmed by nobility.
Noblesse oblige.
Aquarius Season 2025
This coming month is powerful stuff, globally, nationally and on a personal level. As if we don’t already know that. There is a shift, an evanescence, the clear sensation that our collective past, old norms and familiarities are receding fast, that a tide is going out, and we are bearing witness, readjusting our balance in the surf as we are feeling the sand sucked out from beneath our feet. In brief, a few key dates: -
January 19: Sun enters Aquarius and Saturn conjunct Venus in Pisces
Wanting to run with new ideas, dreams and visions, and this applies to close personal relationships. Maybe we are expecting too much right now. Saturn will apply constant reality checks, giving us to-do lists between now and April.
January 21: Sun- Pluto conjunction at 1 degree Aquarius
A degree signifying a new technocratic era. Happening only the day after the US Presidential Inauguration.
January 25: Venus trine Mars.
Finance meets passion. A creative project picks up speed, or gets a green light. A great time for meeting someone new.
January 28: Mercury enters Aquarius
Ideas move fast, a good time for new interests, studies, groups and networks
January 28-29: New Moon in Aquarius
An auspicious new moon ruled by Jupiter also marks the start of the Chinese-Asian Lunar New Year of the cautious, analytical Wood/Earth Snake. Festival lasts until the Full Moon (in Leo)12 February. This will be the first Wood Snake year since 1965. The Lunar north node retrogrades into Pisces, 12th House matters till August 19, 2026 and the south node in Virgo signifying sixth house matters also goes retrograde. What happens or gets set in motion at this time could be a major preoccupation over the next eighteen months. There could also be a second chance at a missed opportunity.
January 30 -February 4: Imbolc. End of Jupiter retrograde. Venus enters Aries till March 27.
This is a busy window. February 3 marks the old British pre-Christian festival of the goddess Brigid, Imbolc, meaning “in the belly of the ewe.” This is the start of lambing season, the mid-point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.
Venus now leaves Pisces and moves into Aries, not her easiest sign, suggesting likely clashes with a special other, or issues with impulse spending. On the other hand, Jupiter which has been retrograde since October 9, now goes direct again, bringing a morale boost and better things for all signs, and especially Aquarius, Gemini, and Libra. And Mercury is trine Jupiter during this window; great news for wider connections, writing - all communications.
February 10: Mercury square Uranus. Disrupted or disruptive news, messages, short distance travel, post and other communications.
February 12: Full Moon in Leo square Uranus. Expect surprises, unexpected news, and major revelations—especially for the fixed sun sign native, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius. But there could be clashes of views and opinions close to home.
February 14: Mercury enters Pisces, its sign of fall till the equinox March 20. Muddled communications, but also a time when we may experience a eureka moment, psychic insights or even supernatural phenomena.
February 18: Sun enters Pisces.
Many Happy Returns, amazing Aquarius! Pluto in its earliest degree of Aquarius brings profound changes for you, even more so than for everyone else. Pluto power means financial matters keep your feet firmly on the ground this year, with a strong possibility of new professional opportunities around July.
The Star
Bridging water, land and sky
Cloudy, cool Aquarian eye
Reasons, gauges.
Rain assuages
Pours, refills an empty jar
Learning, thirsty, leads us far
But Hope outshines all other stars.

Loss and recovery, charting a new course. This is the message of the Six of Swords, the Tarot card representing the second decan of Aquarius. Image from The Gilded Tarot.
Astronomically, Earth has just witnessed a rare comet, A3, a rare portent not to be seen again for 80, 000 years. Mars is at perigee, the closes tit gets to Earth. We have a brilliant Venus and Jupiter…there is plenty of drama going on in the night skies right now, and into Aquarius season 2025.

Thank you for reading.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I find it all fascinating because l have no idea about any of it, not even that l had captured Orion when l took a photo the other day on full moon and posted it, when someone told me Orion was there. 🤦♀️☺️🙏🙏😊
I appreciate all of your writings but in this one, you included your own poem that offers beautiful imagery and leaves us with “Hope”. Well done. Thank you.
